icon  Does a very high fever mean a serious illness?
A very high fever does not usually have anything to do with the severity of an illness.  The exception is children under 3 months old who are not mature immunologically and therefore require much more attention in the case of a fever

I must control my child’s fever. If a fever gets too high it can cause brain damage.

MYTH!!!
For children over 3 months, fevers are not as scary as we’ve been taught to believe. High fevers do NOT cause brain damage. What causes brain damage is actually bacteria that can get to the brain in certain illnesses. In general, it’s ok to take fever-reducing medicines to decrease fever and help your child feel more comfortable, but you can be a little less stressed the next time your child has a fever.
